Vineyard managers call it a “cover crop”. We call if beautiful!
If you have ever been to the Santa Barbara Wine Country in the spring you know what we are talking about. Spectacular cool clear days; hills clothed in fresh green; everything coming back to life. And of course the vines.
Here in the wine country they call it “bud break”, when the vines send out their first shoots and the cycle of a new year begins. In the fall, harvest will begin amongst vines of gold and hills of amber. But for now the cover crop, after protecting the soil all winter long, joins in the celebration of spring. Poppies! California’s beautiful state flower.
