There’s just something about tractors!
Maybe they remind people of one of our oldest professions; farming, or perhaps they’re just a reminder of simpler times when we lived close to the land. But whatever the reason, people seem fond of tractors; especially older tractors. And this tractor, standing proudly at the entrance to Foley Estates, is no exception. Visitors to the tasting room often comment on Foley’s “mascot”.

Vineyard managers call it a “cover crop”. We call if beautiful!
If you have ever been to the Santa Barbara Wine Country in the spring you know what we are talking about. Spectacular cool clear days; hills clothed in fresh green; everything coming back to life. And of course the vines. Here in the wine country they call it “bud break”, when the vines send out their first shoots and the cycle of a new year begins. In the fall, harvest will begin amongst vines of gold and hills of amber. But for now the cover crop, after protecting the soil all winter long, joins in the celebration of spring. Poppies! California’s beautiful state flower.

Nestled in the Santa Rita Hills of the Santa Barbara Wine Country, Sanford sits in an ideal location for Pinot Noir. The first Pinot vineyards were planted here to amazing success. This unusual West-to-East valley siphons the cooling Pacific sea fogs of morning to balance the heat of the days creating this fickle grape’s favorite climate.

As you leave the crossroad town of Los Olivos on CA154 the turnoff for famed Foxen Canyon Road appears. Passing grazing cattle and vineyards you suddenly crest the hill and this marvelous landscape looms into view. Pull over. It’s worth the stop. And if your timing is right, sunset will burnish the vineyards of the Firestone Winery for you.

Santa Barbara Wine Country has a secret. Near the Danish town of Solvang a historic 1926 Sear’s Craftsman kit home sits nestled under California pepper trees overlooking a vineyard of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The spirit at Lincourt takes one back to the serenity and romance of a simpler time. Originally a dairy property, the old farmhouse now provides a quaint tasting room setting. The picnic grounds, lawns and gardens are the perfect spot to spend a leisurely afternoon with friends, a basket filled with gourmet goodies and a bottle of wine.

This beautiful storm approaching the vineyard may not be as beautiful to vineyard managers during harvest. Workers prepare to bring in the grapes before the rain dilutes a summer’s worth of flavor.

Possibly no other feature of the California Central Coast landscape is as recognizable as the oaks that dot the rolling hillsides. Many reach into the hundreds of years as this ancient beauty can attest. Beckmen Winery chose this oak as the symbol of their winery and as a reminder of the history of this land that has become vineyards.

The now famous Sta. Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County were discovered by wine icon Richard Sanford in the 1970’s. He took a chance, planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and amazed the gurus with his world-class wines. Now dozens of wineries call this area home.
But the bevy of new tasting rooms can’t compete with the charm of Alma Rosa’s wonderfully rustic small tasting room. One is taken back to the genesis of winemaking in the Sta. Rita Hills. With weathered boards, a corrugated tin roof and tree-branch shaded porch there may be no better place in the valley to re-live history and taste wine.
